How High Is a High-Rise Legging? The Rise in Inches, and Who Actually Prints It

Quick answer — On the one brand that publishes it, a high-rise legging has a rise of about 10" in a size small and about 12" in an XXL. A fold-over style starts lower, at 8.75". Everywhere else, "high-rise" is a word, not a measurement: it is printed on 77% of the listings we read, so it tells you almost nothing about where the waistband will land on you.

Rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. Inseam decides where the hem lands; rise decides whether the waistband sits on your hip bones, at your navel or above it. It is also the number brands are least willing to give you.

What does "high-rise" actually mean in inches?

Girlfriend Collective lists a rise for each of its fitted leggings, measured on a size S and a size XXL. Here are all six styles we found with a number on the page.

Two things stand out. The legging Girlfriend calls "ultra-high rise" in its description, the Compressive High-Rise, measures exactly the same 10.25" at size S as the Compressive Pocket, which is not named for its rise at all. And the spread inside one brand's high-rise line is 0.75" at size S (9.5" to 10.25"). On the body, that can decide whether a band clears the navel or sits on it.

Does the rise get taller as the size goes up?

Yes, and by a fairly fixed amount. Every Girlfriend style adds between 1.75" and 2.5" of rise from S to XXL. The Compressive Pocket adds the most, 2.5". The Drawstring Pocket adds the least, 1.75".

That matters if you size up for waist room. Going from an L to an XL on the same chart also buys you a slightly taller front. How many leggings are sold as high-rise?

Nearly all of them. We read the title and description of every legging listing in nine public catalogs and sorted each one by the first rise word it used. Colors of the same style count once; shorts, flares, bootcuts and maternity styles are left out.

CRZ Yoga is the extreme case: 63 of 65 listings are some version of high. Its one low-rise legging, the Butterluxe Low Rise Workout Legging 25" at $32, is the only low-rise pair in the whole count. Is waistband height the same thing as rise?

No, but it is the next-best number when the rise is missing. The waistband is only the band at the top. The rise runs from the crotch seam all the way up through it.

Beyond Yoga states its band height in 22 listings: 5" on 20 of them and 4" on 2. Its Spacedye Out Of Pocket High Waisted Full Length Legging ($108) gives three facts together: a 5" waistband, a 30" inseam, and "sits at natural waist." A 5" band at the natural waist means the band's lower edge sits about 5" below your waistline, even without a rise figure.

In the photo above, the band on the center pair sits well below the navel in a seated stretch. Where a band ends up depends on your torso and on how the fabric grips as much as on the word in the listing, which is why a number beats a label.

What do "super high rise" and "sits above the belly button" mean?

They are descriptions, not measurements, and they are the only guidance most brands give. A few examples from listings we read on Sept. 24:

• Senita describes its Salutation Leggings (Skin fabric, 27" inseam) as high-rise, sitting "right above your belly button."
• Bubblelime, a legging brand connected to this site, lists its BWWB009 Super High Waist Embossed Legging ($35.98, 26" and 28" inseams, sizes XS–XL) as "super high rise" with an extra-wide waistband. It does not publish the rise in inches. Its Find Your Inseam page defines rise as the distance from the crotch to the top of the waistband and notes it is taller on high-waisted styles.
• CRZ Yoga uses "super high rise" or a similar term on 5 of its 65 listings and gives no inches for any of them.

Without a number, you are comparing one brand's "super" to another's "high." That is the same problem we found with size labels in five brands' XLs compared.

How do you measure the rise you want?

Take a pair you already like and lay it flat, front up. Put the tape at the crotch seam, where the four seams meet, and run it straight up the front to the top edge of the waistband. Do not stretch the fabric. That figure is your front rise, and it is directly comparable to Girlfriend's numbers.

• If your favorite pair reads about 10" and you are a small, Girlfriend's Compressive High-Rise (10.25") and FLOAT (10.125") are the closest match on paper.
• If it reads 9" to 9.5", the Luxe (9.5") is closer, and the Foldover (8.75" before folding) is lower still.
• If you are an XL or XXL and your pair reads under 11", expect most branded high-rise pairs to sit higher than you are used to.

Why does the same size feel higher on one pair than another?

Three reasons show up in the numbers and descriptions:

• The rise really is different. 0.75" across one brand's line at size S, as above.
• The fabric grips or slides. A compressive knit holds a band in place; a softer, brushed one slides down as you move. Spandex share is part of that, which we measured in how much spandex is in leggings.
• The size chart itself shifts. Brands redraw charts between collections, covered in same brand, different size charts.

FAQ

Is 10 inches a high rise for leggings? On Girlfriend Collective's pages, yes: its high-rise styles measure 9.5" to 10.25" at size S.

Is 12 inches too high? Only relative to size. 12" to 12.75" is where the same Girlfriend styles land at XXL.

Do short women need a lower rise? Not necessarily; rise tracks your torso, inseam tracks your legs. Our petite inseam page covers the length side, and the 31-inch page covers the tall end.

TL;DR — "High-rise" is on 236 of 306 leggings we read, so the word alone will not tell you where a pair sits. Girlfriend Collective is the only one of nine brands that prints the rise: 8.75" to 10.25" at S, 10.75" to 12.75" at XXL, adding about 2" across the size run. Beyond Yoga prints a 5" or 4" waistband. Everyone else, Bubblelime included, gives words only. Measure the front rise on a pair you like and compare it to those numbers.
